You can make a round of ice cold blackberry martinis with just a handful of simple ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredient quantities are listed in the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
    • Vodka - You can use any of your favorite brands or substitute gin for a unique touch of herbal flavor.
    • Lemon Juice - Freshly-squeezed, please!
    • Blackberry Syrup - Made simply from sugar, water and fresh blackberries. More on that below.

    Homemade Blackberry Syrup

Homemade blackberry simple syrup is an easy recipe that you can use to lend a juicy berry flavor to endless beverages. Try it in our non-alcoholic Blackberry Shirley Temples, too!

    1. To make blackberry syrup from scratch, start by mashing blackberries in the bottom of a small sauce pot.

    2. Then, add sugar and water and stir to dissolve. Set over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and allow the syrup to simmer for about 5 minutes.

    3. After simmering, strain the syrup through a cheesecloth lined fine mesh strainer. Voila!

The syrup is ready to be used immediately or can be stored in a mason jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.

How To Make Blackberry Lemon Drops

This is a super simple shaken cocktail recipe. We use a cocktail shaker, but you could also use a mason jar with a lid.

Double straining a cocktail into a martini glass
    1. Combine all of the cocktail ingredients in your shaker or jar. Fill with ice, and shake vigorously for 30 seconds or until icy cold.
    2. Strain the cocktail into a chilled martini glass. We like to double-strain this cocktail using both a Hawthorne and a fine-mesh tea strainer. The Hawthorne strainer holds back all of the ice and the mesh strainer removes any bits of pulp and tiny shards of ice.
    3. Finish this cocktail by expressing a lemon twist over the glass. Squeezing a bit of lemon zest over the glass releases the oils and tons of fresh citrus flavors and scents. After expressing the lemon, you can manicure the peel to give the garnish a pretty appearance with a sharp paring knife.

Bartender's Manual: A Sugared Rim - Classically, a lemon drop martini is garnished with a sweet, sugared rim.

Personally, we prefer tart cocktails and decided to omit the extra sugar for this recipe. However, if you would like, feel free to garnish this drink with the traditional sugar rim. Simply wet the edges of the glass with a touch of lemon juice and dip into a shallow dish of granulated sugar before shaking this drink.
